Nothing’s Better Than Good Books to Read

Good Books to Read for Business & Pleasure * August 2014

This August, it’s about reading addiction.

Most people are not aware that, like all human endeavors, reading is addictive. Maybe it’s not addictive in the traditional sense, like heroine or cigarettes (which I’ve had to leave behind), but I still say reading can be an addiction. Why? Because, if you’re like me, you read to escape the pressures of work & life the way some people sip Scotch and, like a good Scotch, I jones for a good book by the end of the day.

As those who know me know, I was just on vacation. I downed five books in five days — and I’m still going.

it gets worse. I’ll read junk, sometimes, just so I’m reading. And I’m not really that picky: I love classics, children’s literature, skill building books for work — you name it, if it’s a book I’ll consider it.

Ssshh, don’t tell anyone: I stayed up until 2 a.m. when I had to get up for a 8 a.m. meeting this morning just so I could finish my book.

As they say in A.A., you are only as sick as your secrets. Here’s the latest and greatest from my bookshelf to yours.

Good Books to Read

Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy.

Ogilvy on Advertising is a classic in the field of copywriting and I, as you know, am an SEO copywriter and lover of classics so it was a perfect (and overdue!) fit for summer reading. This book, written in the 80s, is pure genius. Mandatory reading for copywriters. The only thing is, I wish he were still alive so we could find out how he navigated the internet. I just know it would have been great!

(Guilty) Pleasure

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan.

The reason Crazy Rich Asians is a guilty pleasure is that it’s all about consumerism and high society. The book, though well-written, is not destined to be an enduring classic. That said, it’s an interesting peek into a way of life most of us will never know and I liked the hopeful ending. At the end of the day, rich people have hopes and dreams just like everyone.

If you would like to have this book for your very own, purchase Crazy Rich Asians at the Anna Colibri Amazon shop.

The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare.

My son read The Witch of Blackbird Pond as summer homework and, when an (adult) friend of mine saw it on our coffee table she told us she loved it so much she read it nine times. Between required by the teacher and love times nine, I was overwhelmed by the social proof and sat down and read it in about four hours. It is highly unlikely that, with all the fresh literary meat available to my book addict self, I will ever read this book again, I very much enjoyed it. Classic entertainment with love and wholesome values. Is there anything better?

If you would like to have this book for your very own, purchase The Witch of Blackbird Pond at the Anna Colibri Amazon shop.

Three enjoyable books even a nonaddict can love.
