Good Books to Read for Business & Pleasure * December 2014

Great Books for Giving

Now is the time to consider what you might like to give friends, family, and colleagues for the holidays. I, of course, love to give and receive books.

The following books all make great choices.

Business

Masters of Sales by Ivan R. Misner.

I am a member of BNI, an international networking group, and have found it a tremendously valuable resource for my business. As Educational Coordinator, I help our membership stay on top of how to give referrals, run meetings efficiently, and work by the “giver’s gain” philosophy.

Today, my educational moment topic was about what happens after you get a referral. In case it isn’t obvious, sales is what happens after getting a referral.

Although BNI doesn’t teach members how to sell, this helpful volume provides top tips and sales philosophy from leaders such as Brian Tracy, Martha Stewart, and Jack Canfield. If you need to improve your sales skills or are just looking for inspiration, this book is for you — or that special colleague.

If you would like to have this book for your very own, purchase Masters of Sales at the Anna Colibri Amazon shop.

Pleasure

The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm.

The Art of Loving would make an ideal Valentine’s Day present to your most significant other, but, since we aren’t there yet, it is also a good choice for anyone you love during these holidays or any others.

I feel inspired by Fromm’s writing style as much as his clear and, in my opinion, apt, explanations of how love works in contemporary culture. The books was originally published in 1956 but, except for a short but homophobic section, very well describes the human condition today.

Consider this book if you secretly know that is more important to love than to be loved — and want to share that message.

If you would like to have this book for your very own, purchase The Art of Loving at the Anna Colibri Amazon shop.

Children

Letters to a Young Brother by Hill Harper.

Letters to a Young Brother offers sensible, yet uplifting, advice to what I call preMen — like my two boys. Although the book is aimed towards young, black males, anyone who reads it will benefit.

At first as I read the book to the boys I wasn’t sure they were engaged, but then I found my older boy (14) reading it instead of doing his homework! I think it is very important for boys to feel connected to role models and have their feelings voiced by others. I was impressed at Harper’s ability to make topics like having a single mom and peer pressure come off as both conversational and “eye to eye.” This would make a great gift for the preMen in your life.

If you would like to have this book for your very own, purchase Letters to a Young Brother at the Anna Colibri Amazon shop.

Enjoy your holidays with these books to add cheer.
