Good Books to Read for Business & Pleasure * February 2015

Books to Love

Love is the theme, of course, this month.

Business

Moments of Impact: How to Design Strategic Conversations That Accelerate Change by Chris Ertel & Lisa Kay Solomon.

The business book I’m highlighting this month concerns communication. It’s about how to create meaningful meetings and strategic conversations. Here’s my theory: Fewer, better meetings are form of love!

I’ll be honest and tell you that I wasn’t excited about reading this book. It seemed like it would be boring, but it’s anything but. It teaches you how to run a good meeting as well as how to create conversations that make a difference. My favorite thing about the book, though, is that it helped me learn about strategy: what it is and what types of strategies succeed in the current business climate.

Pleasure

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides.

The Marriage Plot is directly about love. It is kind of a modern take on Middlemarch, by George Eliot, a book I reviewed several months ago, which spoke to the question of marriage. I like the idea of updating a Victorian form with contemporary sensibility and issues.

People really love The Marriage Plot, but, for some reason, the main female character never spoke to me. In fact, somehow I felt disconnected from every character. It was like I was peeking in, but couldn’t see all the way. Still, the book is beautifully written and left me feeling elevated, if a bit puzzled.

The other thing that is impressive about Eugenides, as an author, is that he doesn’t have his own website. Let’s all be that famous!

Children

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by A. Conan Doyle.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is interesting in a way because I did not really expect my children to like it as much as they do. It is written in an old-fashioned, serious tone and contains no gore, and very little humor.

Strangely, the children seem to love it. I don’t know if it’s a boy thing, or not. Maybe, even if it’s low-key, crime is always a draw. Or, perhaps it’s the cleanly resolved problems and situations (I know that’s what I love about mystery and crime novels).

This classic book is a must read.
