Flashback! A version of this post originally ran in February of 2013, but we haven’t given up on our goals of self-betterment, discipline, determination, and continual learning, and neither should you!
I once told my son that my goal was world domination. He looked shocked. This may be because I usually take a peace and love, yogic-type approach. This makes sense. Those who know me know I am a yoga teacher.
I didn’t want to get too heavy with the poor kid, so what I said was, “It’s a joke.”
He said, “That’s good, because I don’t think just one person should be in charge of everything.” He does have a point. But I appreciated how seriously he took me because. . . .
I Aim For World Domination
It’s not exactly what you think. All I mean is, I have a lot to learn before I can completely dominate the world.
My world, that is. And my world is, as you know, the solopreneur world of tech savvy coaching, values-based marketing and internet publishing services.
World domination of any kind requires patience, which is considered a virtue in Western culture and is also known as one of the 6 Perfections in Buddhism.
If you are interested in being a 21st Century solopreneur (known more humorously as World Dominatrix), let’s find out if you have what it takes.
World Domination Checklist
Characteristics
Running your own business is not for the boring, the bored or the feint of heart. Nope. You need to be gutsy and the following, besides:
- Courageous
- Self-disciplined
- Able to Manage Multiple Projects
- Adaptable
- Persistent
- Patient
- Courteous
- Committed
- Physically fit
It’s okay if you don’t have every single one of these qualities, but each and every one will help you accomplish more of you what you want, and more pleasantly.
Skills
You can find a more in-depth look at some of these skills in my post from September 15, 2012, titled, E-skills for Your Solopreneur Self. For now, take a look at this updated list and ask yourself where you need, or want, to fill in the holes.
Remember, you don’t need to know all of this. But you do need to know someone who does.
- Networking
- Writing
- Photography
- Videography
- Sound Editing
- WordPress and or other Content Management System (CMS)
- HTML & CSS
- Programming Languages like javascript, PHP and MySQL (eek!)
Knowledge base
These are not technical skills, so much as they are knowledge areas. It’s less “how to” but rather more “what” and “why?” Again, it’s possible you won’t need to know all of this, but someone on your team sure will.
- Blogging
- Content Marketing
- Integrated marketing & communications
- Social Media Platforms
- Productivity Tools
- SEO
- Analytics
Let’s not forget, too, that in addition to these general skills and knowledge base areas, it helps to have an established expertise, such as bow hunting, salsa dancing, or rocket science. You get the idea.
